Kay’s work in sound innovations encompasses thirty-five years of experience in complementary medicine, training, staff development, and academic research. Her research covers a synthesis of studies in neuro-physiology, auditory processing, the voice/ ear/ brain connection, sound healing, dyslexia training, new energy science ideas and technologies.
Earlier work in health and education — including social ecology, body psychotherapy, and business management — ensured that Kay had the skill foundation needed to get cutting-edge listening methods established. Whether working in community organisations or in private practice, Kay has always taken a ‘helper’ facilitative role.
Why did Kay Start Sound Education?
Following body-mind psychotherapy training in England, Kay started a psychotherapy practice in London. She became intrigued about potential outcomes for dyslexics when one of her clients, an adult with dyslexia, told her about his successful university degree (after three earlier failures). The client had completed an innovative therapy using sound, which had developed his neural pathways through the voice/ear/brain. Working with him further, Kay noticed how psychosomatic conditions can be linked to previous trauma and learning.
Returning to Australia, Kay started Sound Education in 1990. Her aim was to develop her knowledge and practice hands-on with sound innovations that were known to improve health, learning and well-being. She trained directly with Dr Tomatis in USA and France (1991-93).
Undertaking a Masters Degree in Applied Science (completed in 1996) was the catalyst for writing up Kay’s experiences of that work. This was an important extension of her knowledge and practice of psychosomatic therapy. From this viewpoint, Tomatis’ discovery of the voice/ear/brain as a micro-regulator of the whole person made good sense. Kay already understood how the emotions constricted the whole person. She then learned through practice that by strengthening this micro-regulator of the ears — improving the auditory process of the emotional component of hearing — it brings choice and flexibility to the whole person.
Davis Dyslexia Correction Training. Training with Ron Davis (author of The Gift of Dyslexia), in 1997-98 Kay added to her understanding of perception and learning. Flying to the US to complete trainings, Kay was the first in Australia to practice this work. After four years in that practice, she broadened her approach, integrating her prior knowledge into an innovative sensory literacy program.
Other Relevant Background
Trained as a Somatic Psychotherapist with Gerda Boyesen (UK) (1980s). This experiential study was followed by working in the London clinic as Clinical Coordinator, developing training curriculum and supervising students.
SELECT or Electro Crystal Therapy. Kay found this therapy in 1988 while working in London and has continued the practice ever since. Using simple technology, she can radically change subtle vibrational sound and encourage healing of the body/mind through sound.
Tomatis work (1992-2000). Kay conveyed the innovative work of Dr. Tomatis through educational workshops, short courses and sponsored overseas authors and lecturers; Don Campbell (1992) and Ron Davis (1996).
As a Tomatis Consultant these last 17 years, Kay’s private practice has been based on listening, language and learning difficulties.
Earlier practice with adults in counselling and somatic psychotherapy — combined with the specialisation in dyslexia — led to Kay’s study at a PhD level. She wanted to understand how students with dyslexia managed their tertiary studies and whether she could help. She used action learning and listening methodologies with mature age adults who had health problems and diverse learning issues.
